Air ionizers use ions to remove particles, microbes, and odors from the air. Air ionizers make the air in a room healthier for people to breathe, especially for people with allergies, asthma, and other airway-related illnesses. Ionizers emit negative ions that cause particles to adhere to surfaces. They are not good purifiers because (most ionizers) they are too weak to work (they produce harmful ozone) and PM2.5 particles (cause particles to adhere to surfaces in the house, instead of actually removing them).
Behavioral scientists are increasingly interested in understanding the effects of negative air ionization on mood and depression. Interestingly, another study found that those with a morning chronotype benefited the most from the negative ionization of high-density air. After comparing the response of antidepressants with the naturalistic simulation of dawn and negative ionization of air for the treatment of seasonal affective disorder, using phototherapy as a reference condition, it was concluded that both tools have antidepressant effects that could be considered as possible “alternatives” to bright light or medications. In a study that combined bright light therapy at different times of the day with negative ionization of low or high density air, it was found that members of the group that used bright morning light therapy combined with negative ionization of high-density air showed the greatest improvement in SAD symptoms. In addition, the CDC and EPA suggest that, when combined with well-established measures, such as the use of masks, social distancing and surface disinfection, negative air ionizers are one of several air cleaning products that can minimize the spread of COVID-19. So, do popular ionizing air purifiers, such as the Ionic Pro air purifier and the Clarifion air purifier, work? Negative air ionizers, a type of air purification device, are widely used in personal and commercial spaces to improve air quality and health.
A summary of scientific testing of air purifiers revealed that most air ionizers have no noticeable effect on particle levels (p. 5). In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, people have been installing ionizers in offices and restaurants. Negative air ionizers have been around for many years, and scientists have long assumed that they provide general health benefits.
Unlike many purifier companies, Smart Air does not use ionizers in its purifiers to achieve its high CADR rates, only safe and effective HEPA filters.
